VVC instructor creates ‘Yogalates’ for weight loss

VICTORVILLE — By fusing together the best of Yoga with the core work exercises, a faculty member at Victor Valley College has created her own brand of exercise.

Instructor Lynn Guardado took on the waistline battle and created Yogalates.

“I’ve been teaching at VVC for approximately 11 years. And nine years ago, I developed Yogalates as a low-impact exercise program for students who couldn’t keep up with the rigors of high-impact aerobics,” Guardado said.

She said the Yogalates exercises became so popular and achieved such great results that her classes are filled to capacity.

At the urging of her students who wanted to continue Yogalates during school breaks and due to the popularity of the classes, Guardado has produced an eight set DVD program for anyone who wants to do Yogalates at home.

“The DVDs are helpful in many ways. It is a total fitness system. It incorporates hand weights, an exercise ball, Yoga mats and Pilates core work,” Guardado said.

Through Yogalates, Guardado has developed what she feels is the right combination of exercise, dance and diet that people can follow to lose weight and get in shape.

Trying to take the right steps to lose weight and get in shape often leads to a lot of mis-steps, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report stated that 45 percent of women and 25 percent of men are trying to lose weight at any one time, but only one-fifth are using the recommended approach of fewer calories and increased exercise.

It’s not just exercise that Guardado brings to her waistline battle. She said the other part of the battle is knowing the importance of proper nutrition and diet.
